John Conway is a digital media pioneer, having launched in January 1996 one of the country’s most visited local media sites, WRAL.com. The launch was followed by niche sites and mobile apps for technology and sports coverage in North Carolina.
As Vice President of Digital Media for Capitol Broadcasting Company until September 2022, John oversaw operation of the 55-person New Media staff, which managed Web and mobile brands such as WRALSportsFan.com, HighSchoolOT.com and WRALTechWire.com. Additionally, his group included a full-service digital marketing services unit called WRAL Digital Solutions. It provided a full range of customized marketing solutions to more than 600 clients in several states.
John joined Capitol Broadcasting in 1995 as the first managing editor of what was then called WRAL OnLine. He later served as WRAL.com’s Product Development Director and Creative Services Director before assuming the role of General manager and later Vice President of Digital Media.
Under his leadership, WRAL.com won the national Edward R. Murrow Award for best local TV Web site in 2009, and in 2010 WRAL.com was named best local TV website in an international competition sponsored by Editor & Publisher. The Local Media Association awarded CBC New Media three first-place awards in 2018 for best digital agency, best website redesign for WRAL TechWire and best digital news initiative.
In addition to serving as Executive Director of the North Carolina Broadcast History Project, John also is Director of Special Projects for Capitol Broadcasting Company.
John is a 1985 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a B.A. in journalism. He has worked as a newspaper reporter and editor for papers in Raleigh, Greensboro and Orlando. He also has held administrative positions with the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, including assistant dean for distance education and executive education.
