WFAE started broadcasting on April 18, 1977, as the student-run radio service for UNC Charlotte, with limited reach to the campus and its surrounding neighborhoods. They signed on air with 15 minutes of birdcalls as their first broadcast.

The station originally was broadcasting from 4 to 11 p.m., playing a range of jazz, classical, folk, and select rock music in addition to educational material.

The station was approved to move to 100,000 watts in 1978 and moved to an upgraded facility in June 1981, where it eventually evolved into one of North Carolina’s leading public radio stations.
