WFBQ begins operation in Raleigh on Oct. 25, 1924. Its studio sat beside the Wake County Courthouse.

Durham Life Insurance Company bought the station in 1927 and renamed it WPTF, for the company slogan “We Protect The Family,” which Durham Life had adopted back in 1914.

It reached 5,000 watts in 1933. Durham Life began airing a live church service every Sunday in 1929. Today, WPTF broadcasts at 50,000 watts, still at 680 AM.
