WLAC, at then-N.C. State College, begins broadcasting Oct. 16, 1922. The launch coincides with the North Carolina State Fair. It becomes one of the first educational broadcasting efforts in the South. Gov. Cameron Morrison and News & Observer publisher Josephus Daniels were among the first speakers heard over the air. State College is now N.C. State University. The call letters stood for “We Lead All College.”
